West Valley City • Michael Pelech scored the first goal for his team and added the game-winning goal in overtime as the Utah Grizzlies defeated the Bakersfield Condors 2-1 on Saturday night at the Maverik Center in ECHL action.
"He was happy," said Grizzlies coach Tim Branham of Pelech's reaction to the game-winning goal. "That was a big one for us and he is a big part of this team who is having a great year."
Igor Bobkov made his return in goal for the Grizzlies as he captured his fourth win of the season.
"I thought he was really good and played really well," Branham said. "We did a better job as a team and Bobkov was great and I'm really proud of our boys."
Defense was a key factor in the game as the defense killed an early 5-on-3 advantage for the Condors.
The Grizzlies killed seven power plays overall on the night.
"The old saying is that if you don't score (on a 5-on-3), you don't deserve to win the game," said Branham. "We did a good job blocking shots and getting in lines and the best penalty kill player is your goalie."
The Grizzlies captured two more points in the standings. The Condors earn a point for taking the game to overtime and cut the Grizzlies' lead to 3 points for fourth place in the Pacific Division standings.
These two teams will hit the ice one more time to end a three game series as the series will shift gears to Bakersfield next weekend.
"We are definitely one of the most talented teams in the league when we have work ethic and nobody can beat us," Branham said.
